PC rooms

University students can surf, research, print or use the email service at around 250 public computer workstations with direct internet access.
Three course rooms with PC workstations are available to teaching staff from the departments and institutions for conducting training courses.
The computers are located at a total of 5 locations (BITS SPACE, PC pool B02, course rooms).

PCs in the library

In addition to the computers in the PC rooms, there are PCs in the departmental libraries. These have the software equipment of the PC pools.

Use of virtual PCs

For students who depend on the use of the software of the PCs and do not have the possibility to work on site, they can request approval for virtual use from their teaching staff, instructors, lectures.

Rules of conduct

Our PC rooms offer a quiet working atmosphere that enables concentrated PC work at individual workstations.
We therefore ask all users to adhere to the basic rules:

  • Please keep quiet and avoid loud conversations.
Exceptions: In the large pool area of BITS SPACE and in course rooms if conversations are necessary as part of an event.
  • Please mute mobile phones and do not make calls.
  • Carrying drinks is permitted. The consumption of other drinks and food is not permitted.

Environmentally conscious printing

  • Print only as much as absolutely necessary.
  • Print multi-page documents double-sided and/or 2 on 1.
  • Check whether documents can also be used purely digitally.

All these things can save paper and toner and thus contribute to more sustainability.

Printing

Students have the opportunity to make printouts required for their studies in the PC pools. These are free of charge, in black and white and on A4 paper at the printers of BITS and the library.

Procedure:

  1. Open the document to be printed on the PCs in the BITS SPACE Pool (B01-006) or in the PC Pool (B02-220).
  2. Select the printer with the name"studiprint" and send the print job.
  3. Go to one of the printers in BITS SPACE (B01-005) or the library and hold the UniCard up to the reader. An automatic registration will take place and the print jobs will be displayed.
  4. The printout can now be started.

If print jobs are not printed after 2 hours, they expire automatically.

Limit: 200 pages per day (from 31 March 2025).

For sustainability reasons, the limit is intended to reduce paper and toner consumption, which is caused by large print jobs with many pages. Very large print jobs also block the devices for a very long time and lead to waiting times. This procedure is initially being trialled to determine whether this will be the final solution for limiting.

Notification if the limit is exceeded
If the daily limit is exceeded when a print job is sent, a pop-up notification is displayed on the Windows PC. In addition, the PaperCut printing system sends an e-mail to the university e-mail address.

Explanation: Daily limit ≠ 200 sheets of paper
The daily quota is 200 pages per person. For the system, this means 200 printed pages, but these may not be equal to the sheets of paper used.
Example:
If the "double-sided" option (recommended setting) is used for a print job of 10 pages, these are printed on 5 sheets of paper. However, 10 pages will then be deducted from the daily quota.

Scanning

Students can also use the printers to scan documents.

Procedure:

  1. Go to one of the printers in BITS SPACE (B01-005) or the library and hold your UniCard up to the reader. You will be automatically logged in.
  2. Select Scan on the display.
  3. Insertdocument(s) into the scanning unit of the multifunctional device.
  4. The scan is automatically sent to your personal university e-mail address. This cannot be changed. The subject and file name can be edited and further settings made if required.
  5. Click on Start scanning to send the documents as a PDF to the e-mail address.
  6. When finished, click Logout .

Notes for teaching staff, instructors, lectures

The software equipment of the workstations in the public PC rooms may differ. Course instructors should therefore inform themselves about the installed programs before the start of the course (see equipment under PC rooms). If additional software or other versions of already installed products are required, BITS should be informed in good time (at least 2 weeks before the start of the course).

If course participants do not have an account in BITS, access authorizations can be activated for the project duration:
Application for guest accounts

Roomreservations should be made as early as possible via the electronic course catalogue (ekvv) (central Room Scheduling).
